Silence – stil

Even een nederlandstalige post…

All for € and € for all – European Union story

The European Union, a big word that represent a community where I’m part of ! Our small country Belgium actually holds the center of this community, so in a way I’m proud.
But if you look closely there are gaps in the design… the community has a lot of problems that need to be resolved to keep it working fluently ( the design for one European law springs to mind ). Now let me share you a small story about something so trivial that it just seems silly that it hasn’t been corrected yet !

Let’s take an example as reference, just so everyone understands the example I’m addressing. The United States of America is one good example of a Union like structure ! And I mean the design, so no interpretation what soever about the current implementation. But like I said it’s a good reference.

What do you think should a Union have in common ? Well let me tell you, 3 things actually :
1. One monetary system
2. One metric system
3. One law ( maybe should include one police force/army )

Well apart from the one law, the EU is far from this design ! We still have a metric system that isn’t used in Great Britain and the Euro isn’t used there either. But you could argue that we are moving in the right direction… and that’s true, because things are moving and the result should be more like an Union.

But what bothers me the most is the inability the EU has in making any decisions ( my opinion ). Let’s get back to the one monetary system…
What on earth were they thinking when they decided to force the use of the Euro ? “Oh just let everyone do their thing with this new system…” ?? Well that is just the thought they had !!
Let me put it in one simple question : How would you write the amount sixty euros using numbers and the € sign ?
If you would think this is an easy question you are wrong !! If you think you have the correct answer fast, you could be dead wrong too !!

Examples of writing ( pick your choice ):

* € 60
* €60
* 60€
* 60 €

So in other words, there is no unified way of writing this mentioned in any EU document ( no to my knowledge ) ! Doesn’t this seem odd ? Why hasn’t this been presented… remember my reference, well how should it look like when the people of the USA would use a different writing on the East coast as the ones on the West coast ? It would just look plain stupid, well here in the EU this is just a common fact !! I just don’t get it, why hasn’t this been addressed during the roll out of the Euro ? It would only seem natural to have the same writing in all EU countries.

So for all the non believers ( I was one to start with ), let me show you my search path and you shall see that this ‘typo’ is true !
Let’s start with the obvious search of all, Wikipedia ( not the most correct source, but by far the easiest to search ).
The result can be found here and it states : Placement of the sign is also an example of diversity. Partly since there are no official standards on placement, countries have generated varying conventions or sustained those of their former currencies.

Nice, my first search result already acknowledges my speculation… but still my hope wasn’t gone yet. So I searched the reference material in my own country and I found 2 specific websites that can be seen here ( KU Leuven ) and here ( taaladvies.net ), mind you both in dutch. But here the result is that we in Belgium should use the writing like this € 60, so in other words first the Euro sign, then a space and then the amount.
Thank God I thought, there is an unified way, even though it would only be in Belgium ( but I guess each country has it own standard ). So I lived happily ever after, NOT ! Only a few days after this, just by accident I found another website ! But this time one on a higher level, one of the European commission, one to my knowledge of the people who reside in our own capital Brussels. So even though I was expecting some back up to my previous search results, this got worse. Their standard is to use 2 different writings, one for the English language and one for all others ( who in the world writes these standards ) !!
So if you are a English writer you should write : € 60 but all others ( me included ) should write 60 € !
The details can be found here

Nice… so now I’m stuck with a moral problem… do I follow my instinct and the dutch pages I found and still write € 60 or do I use the European standard ( mind you this is a publications office standard, that is only supposed to be used internally ) 60 €.

What do you people think ??

Taste >> Red Wine

Sometimes we like to drink some wine at home ! Mostly during the weekends. Not only while we are eating but also when enjoying a good movie or sitting outside on the terrace.

There are many different tastes and I’m for sure not an expert in this matter… but I wanted to share my favourite red wine ( for several years in fact ) !

First let me point out how I first came in contact with my favourite wine !! Well, my wine shopping is done in 3 categories :

  1. The wine for ‘those special occasions’, nice dinners and our own favourites, are all bought at our local wine shop called Het wijnhuis. They offer very good service and keep track of my buing habbits
  2. Wine for normal get togethers or family dinners are coming from our local mall Delhaize. They offer a wide range of wines and are know for their good selection.
  3. BBQ wines ( big party drinks ) are coming from another local mall where price is more an issue then superb taste, although they still are enjoyable to drink ! Aldi is what I’m speaking about.

But back to how I got to know the wine… well several times a year het wijnhuis will invite all their customers for an ‘open wine day’ and provide you with a small selection of their own ! So you pay them a visit during that day and are presented with the wines on their selection list, to sample a taste !

So on one of these events, I was presented with the following wine : Academia del Sole – Negroamaro Sangiovese – Puglia. It’s a wine from the winery Calatrasi, situated in the south of Italy near Palermo.

Accademia_negrosangio1

The wine itself concists out of 2 grape selections, 60% of the Negroamaro, a specific grape for the region of Puglia and the other 40% is the Sangiovese. The combination is just perfect ! ( for my taste that is 🙂 )

On a side note… there is also a ‘rosato’ wine that I like very much that also features this Negroamaro grape, called Quatroventi Rosato. And looking at some web review, I’m not the only one :), read about it here !

For all people who are hooked on the internet, there is also a very nice wine log website to keep track of your own favourites online : WineLog.net. Here is my current log record – Depechie’s wine list.

bk Cycling route management overview

Well better late then never 😉 I’ll give a small overview of my current progress in my cycling website.

So the real purpose is to have all available cycling network points charted onto a Google maps interface. This with the extra ability to create your own routes offline and share them with other people.

What’s currently available

  • I charted a small portion of available network points at the north of Mechelen
  • I added a bunch of network points from around Brugge
  • You can select network points that are connected through a route to build up your own cycling route
  • When you composed a route, you can save it and share it through a special designated url
  • You can also, during composition of your route, always clear the last selected network point

What’s currently on track for improvement ( some are up in a land of far far far far away 😉 )

  • Possibility to enter a location and jump to that location on the map
  • Get detailed route GPS information to show ‘nice’ tracks on the Google map
  • Give a clean printable overview page of the Google map and the network points selected
  • Let people add points of interest
  • Suggest a route between two distant network points
  • Update the design
  • Able to upload / download routes through GPX or KML

As you see this project has still some features that need to be added ! But since I switched from an asp.net to a PHP/JavaScript version, things got very easy 🙂 .

But still anybody who wants to help in any way ( programming, design or providing route data ), can always contact me through the contact form here on the blog ( upper right corner ).

Cry for help to all cycling people !

This post is a cry for help…
I’m shouting out to all the people who love cycling ! Actually I have to be more specific, a cry to all the cycling lovers in Belgium !

Logo thx to Mirthe

And why am I needing help, well I’m creating a new website that will allow people to plan and share cycling trips online !! This doesn’t sound very fancy, but the catch is, that you can use specific designated points ( called Fietsknooppunten in Belgium ) ! If you want to get more details about this concept, just have a look here ( in Dutch ).

So what do I need from you guys ? Well I need GPS coordinates ! Because now I only have a small set of bike points and I would like to add more… and I need a GPS log of the route between 2 points, so that the route is nicely displayed on the Google Map.

If you want to help, just use the email contact option here on my site ( right top of the screen ) to get in touch with me, so we can work out the details.

To get a feel of how the program works, just browse to my test site at FreeHostia.com ! BUT be aware this is a test site, so there could be down time. Normally you can already select several points ( that are connected to each other ) and save your selection as a cycling route !! You then get a shareable link ! AGAIN these links can disappear in time, because when the program is more stable I’m going to reset the database.

Enjoy and please support me in my quest !

UPDATE :Ok I have to be honest about this, it seems I’m not the only one with this idea ! Check out some other online route managers !! Here and here and an offline tool here

ReviewMe – ArticleChecker

I got a new assignment from the ReviewMe crew :). This time I’m reviewing a website called ArticleChecker. The due date is today, so I’m hoping I’m not to late.

The main feature for this website is checking if some kind of text appears somewhere else on the internet ! They also call it a Duplicate Content Checker.

At first I thought, what the heck, this seems just silly… checking on an existing text to see if there are any other references on the net. But then I thought further and to be honest it just looks silly but is indeed something very useful !

One big example would be like the Medium4You setup that is happening here in Belgium ! There are examples that they use posts from other blogs without permission, check it out here, and I’m sure other sites do similar things.

So what is a blogger to do, when he wants to check if popular posts are copied ? Well… just use ArticleChecker ! You paste some text inside the input field and check what search platforms to use.

When there are results, you get a nice overview with some insight on the found references ! Like I said earlier, it just seems to easy to use, but looking deeper I sure love the potential it has.

I hope you will check it out too 😉
