Look, Mirthe is asking questions !! And let’s see if I can answer them.

It involves smoking…

* What is your start date

There is none, I’m no smoker… both of my parents were ( they’ve quit ) and I’ve had enough second smoke during childhood for the rest of my life.

* What will be your start date

 Like I stated above, I guess I had enough smoke while I was younger, so I’ve no intentions to start picking up this nasty habit.

* How come you never started smoking

I just don’t like it, it makes me feel sick and I like to be healthy 🙂

So… Buddha, PieterC and Wim are you guys guilty ?

Running up that hill

I don’t know what’s up with that tune from Kate Bush, but it has everyone up and about at the moment !! And don’t forget about that beautiful cover done by Placebo ! But we are distracting from the real post here 😉

SO running, it has always been around, but since our own national television VRT has created a sport series for everybody to follow, running has become ever more popular ! The series was called Start 2 Run and they even came up with the super idea to create podcasts so everybody with an iPod or mp3 player could join !! Of corse this isn’t the only schema you can use, but it has made several people take up running.

Now the blog sphere has always been keen about following new hypes, so it doesn’t strike us odd when there are more like me out there ;), the first here ?, one spotted here, another here, more running over here, and here, even with data added here, back stories here and here and last but not least with some running training info here !!

So my personal goal is to perform the 10miles of Antwerp next year… a year worth of training should do the trick ;). I know that is too far, so this coming September I’ll be running the 5km in Mechelen. So far I’ve done lesson 12 of the podcast series and I like it very much… they tell you when to start running and when to stop and even play some music during the session ! I even have to say my fitness level is going up, because I always run with a HRM, and during the last few sessions I’m able to keep a fairly low rate. Maybe I should read up a bit more on the subject, some info can be found here though.

Now on the other hand I’m also looking to get more info, data, statistics on my running and I’m currently in doubt whether I should buy that fancy Nike+ sport kit for the iPod ! But I’ve read in a review somewhere that you can’t replace the battery and the life time is maybe a bit short ? On the other hand I like the design and concept behind it, so maybe in the near future I’ll buy it :). And for all you tracking freaks, just take a look at this site !

Ok enough about sports… here are the 2 clips from the start of this post !!

Peter Himshoot : a friend from my previous company
The facts of life : a friend from my previous company
Mario Van Damme : a friend from my current company

  • Are there other bloggers you met in real life through blogging ?

 Only the ones I met at the bWards…
Dramoghe, Kleine keizerin, Dipfico, the female part of Eskimokaka

  •  Who would you like to meet, who’s also blogging

Well… Mirthe for sure 😉 and would like to have a word with Kathleen and all the other people on my blogroll !!

Well that’s it for the stick, I’ll pass it along to Kladblog and Dipfico if they are up for it 🙂

Another small update

Seems I’m missing my pictures I’ve uploaded in 2007 :(, I hope the guys of can restore them !

Another note : the bWards ! It was fun, they had some troubles with the mechanical gear in the beginning, but the overall was very positive. Bigger next year 😉 ?

Met some nice people by the way !

* First person who came up to us was Bart, he didn’t knew me, but I knew him 😉
* Had a chat with Dipfico : nice guy, very open person, like he is on his blog ( promised to keep in touch through some 80ies links 😉 )
* Had a small chat with Kleine keizerin, also a very nice person ( girl ), seems that we have mutual friends !
* Gave Eskimokaka his long awaited flag 🙂 ! Recollected some old war stories from our student time and he promised to get back in touch to offer me a drink LOL
* Went over to Dramoghe, just to say hello ! I promised her I would do, so I did ;). And yes the new hair style looks pleasing 😀
* Asked Atryu what he was doing… he just took pictures for his incredible photo blog ! Your dutch is prefect, by the way…

I’ve not talked to ( and I’m not happy about it :(, wanted to, but they were to surrounded with other people ) but noticed them around…

* Kathleen
* Pieter
* Michel Vuijlsteke

So I’m up for next year because this was fun !

eID ranting !

This post is targeting all Belgium readers, but considering the success it has in the digital market, I think this post could benefit everybody.

To start, in Belgium every citizen has a personal identity card… this used to be a small card with all personal info, like your current address, gender and age.
But thanks to the digital revolution, Belgium created an eID ! In other words a smaller card with a chip embedded that will contain even more info about the citizen, like a digital signature to electronically sign documents online.

Now nothing but good words about this evolution, but let me show you the loopholes in the system ( all found through personal experience by getting my own card ).

* Acquire the card

First you have to acquire the card, this happens with you getting a letter indicating to go to the local community with a freshly taken photograph and some money to pay for the handling cost !

So what is the problem with this, well they’ve created a set of rules that needs to be followed when presenting your photograph ( check it here ).
So to be compliant, you actually best take the picture digitally so you can correct small errors or take the picture again ! BUT you can’t present the picture in any digital form !! Let me repeat this, you CAN’T give a digital version ! Meaning that following procedure will be taken :

  1. Take picture
  2. Go to photographer to print picture on quality paper ( one of the rules )
  3. Go to community to deliver paper
  4. Community sends paper to government for eID processing
  5. Government digitalizes paper
  6. You get your eID with a digital version of your paper

Did you notice the flaw in the process ? Let me help you… you have a digital version, but you have to create an analogue version, so they can recreate a digital version and you have to pay for it ! How lame is this…

* Receiving the card

This is not for everyone but could happen to a select few. I live at a place where they divided some land in 2 separate parts and resold them. So to avoid the problem assigning house numbers they just indicate our place with 405A and the neighbours with 405B ! All done at the community and this information is presented on our land certificate.

So when you go to the community to receive your eID and notice following house number specification : 405/A000, you start ask questions and get the weirdest answers !

It seems that the government created a structure to indicate the correct location of a specific apartment. This structure is given a 4 figure place, I don’t know all the details but 2 of it gives information about the floor level and the apartment number.
Now because of this structure, people with separate house numbering are also stuck with trailing numbers !! It gets even stranger that they can use anything from the alphabet inside it, but can’t ( because of ruling ) leave out the trailing zero’s !!!

So not only do I now have 2 separate references to our house ( on the land certificate and my eID ), I also have trailing zeros that aren’t actually there…

When someone sends me a letter now, the postal office can get 2 different indications for the same house !! Taking into account that there are sometimes already some problems getting the right letters for 405A or 405B, adding the 405/A000 reference will add up the mistakes.

I know these are some minor things, but for me being in the software business, I just can’t except this flaw. PLEASE ANYONE CHANGE THIS !

Update: I’m not the only one with problems about this eID ! Take a look here

Update: Another progress ! But not yet in Belgium ? Here…

Social events 2007

Oh my god… 2006 was very low in regard to social networking or any culture activity !
But as it turns out 2007 is just quite the opposite.

Just reaching the middle of February and following things are already on my calendar :

Man and like I said before, we didn’t even reach the end of February !! And I didn’t even mention the fact that I’m missing the Kim Wilde ( also at AB ) because I couldn’t find any friends who would like to tag along !!

Ooh what a year 😉

Grouping the masses

Well to be honest I just love all those online services that let you group like minded people ! Also keeping your own profile online targeted by some service is a great thing…

Now Flickr has been around for a while now and I’ve had my account set up a long time ago ( not a pro though, don’t like to pay much 😉 ). But only now I’ve used their grouping function.

So for our Wing Tsjun organisation I’ve created a Flickr pool, so all the people in our organisation who took pictures that are related to Wing Tsjun, can now centralise those pictures inside the pool !

Of course the pool is publicly available for browsing, so just check it out here !

Music for the Masses

For the people who don’t yet know this ( should be impossible, but you never know )… I’m a HUGE fan of Depeche Mode !! I own every almost all their full cd’s, all their concert dvd’s and also some collectors items. So yes a bit of a fan 😉

But last year my wife bought me something special as a gift : Depeche Mode – Stripped. The biography of the band in paperback form !

The beginning of the Depeche Mode history started in the early 80ies and the book dedicates much info about the influences the band members got during their first years into stardom. And guess what, when I read about it, I got back into the new wave, synth pop mood again !!

Ooh man, those where the high days for music lovers ! Songs like Underpass by John Foxx, Are friends’ electric? by Gary Numan ( Tubeway Army ), Back to nature by Fad Gadget, Being boiled by The Human League or Our darkness by Anne Clark. I could go on forever ( some people are making lists about it, but we have to be patient ), just SO good was that time for brilliant music.

So just sit back and enjoy 🙂

Update: ( one that just has to be in this small list )
